Vocabl dares you to say new words out loud in real life, with Blurt the porcupine as your scene partner. The app is built to keep your practice yours. Most of what you do never leaves your device, we run no third-party tracking, and we never sell your data. This page explains, plainly, the few places your data does travel and why.
This policy applies to the Vocabl iOS app published by Quill Labs ("we", "us"). It describes the data the app handles on your iPhone and through the services it connects to. It does not cover anything you do outside the app.
The heart of Vocabl — your word list, the stories you log, your streaks, XP, badges, and any audio clips you record — is stored locally on your device using Apple's on-device database. We do not have a server that collects it.
If you share text to Vocabl from another app to catch a word for Blurt's stash, that text is processed entirely on your device and the captured word is stored locally with the rest of your data. Shared text is never uploaded anywhere.
Deleting the app removes this local data from your device.
To rehearse a line and to record optional story clips, Vocabl asks for microphone access. To check that you actually said the target word, it uses speech recognition. iOS performs this recognition on your device wherever your device supports it. Audio and recognition happen only while you are actively using these features, and recordings you keep are stored locally (see section 02).
If you use Vocabl's social features — adding friends, the leaderboard, and "larp checks" — that information is stored in your iCloud account through Apple's CloudKit, so it can sync between you and your friends. Apple's handling of iCloud data is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.
To help you find friends who already use Vocabl, contact identifiers you choose to check are converted into an irreversible hash on your device before any lookup. Vocabl never uploads or stores your raw contacts, phone numbers, or email addresses.
The social features are optional. If you never add a friend, no social data is created.
Blurt's rehearsal scenes are generated on your device using Apple's built-in on-device models, or from offline templates bundled in the app. Nothing leaves your device to create them, and no third-party AI service is used.

Vocabl is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
If we change how Vocabl handles data, we will update this page and its effective date above. Significant changes will be reflected in a new app version's release notes.
